Why Is Employee Training Important?

Your employee training is either facilitating or preventing your company's expansion. It's that important.

Everyone "knows" that employee training is important, but how much money do you spend on it every year? According to a study done by Training Magazine in 2001, companies that spent approximately $273 per employee per year on training averaged a 7% voluntary turnover rate while companies that spent about $218 per employee per year averaged a 16% voluntary turnover rate. According to a study of 540 companies done in 1998 by the ASTD, those that invested more in training realized a 37% higher gross profit per employee.

The studies are clear. Those companies that invested more in employee training made more money.

How does training affect turnover? According to a study done by ASTD in 2003, 41% of employees at companies with poor training planned on leaving within a year vs. 12% planned departures at companies with excellent training. Thinking with that, consider the American Management Association's study that found that the average cost of losing, replacing and restoring equivalent productivity when a valued professional leaves is, on the average, one times salary.

The actual cost of poor or no employee training--the cost of incompetence, inefficiency and human error--is staggering.

Many businesses that meet hard times begin eliminating training costs, causing quite a vicious circle of inefficiency, reduced profits and increased turnover costs. This cycle, if not fixed, eventually destroys any organization.

So, why aren't you putting more into your employee training programs? Like most other executives and business owners, you probably don't know where to begin. You may even feel overwhelmed by the amount of time and effort that would go into it. That's understandable. If you start looking for companies to do it for you, you've undoubtedly found scores of training companies all acclaiming their programs as the best and promising the world in ROI, improved efficiency and productivity.

Unfortunately, most of the training methods out there don't work.

By "don't work," I mean they are slow, they don't teach all the information required to do the job, they don't result in 100% job proficiency and they aren't well accepted by the staff. What they do result in are employees that are confused and unstable, that need a lot of on-the-job training and that make a lot of errors...factors that cost you significant sums of money.

How can I say that, though? Well, not only have we worked with everyone from small business owners to global corporations and have seen all kinds of training methods in action, we've researched and tested many of the popular systems currently available.

We are different. I know, everyone says that, but I want to prove it to you.

From our research and testing, we isolated the key, workable training techniques and use only those. They are brutally simple. Ingenious, but simple. Einstein once said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." This is very relevant to employee training. We found that one of the most important aspects of workable training programs was the ability to make the complex simple and understandable. We have become experts at this and have an array of training tools that we use to accomplish it. One of the most effective tools is drilling.

Don't take my word for it though. I want to show you, in detail, our training method and if its workability, and dare I say ingenuity, isn't immediately obvious to you, then that's my loss.
