You can make every salesperson in your company a Master Closer.

Contrary to popular belief, anyone can learn to be an honest, excellent salesperson--a Master Closer. High-pressure techniques and lying have no place in sales and are only necessary in the absence of real sales knowledge and ability.

Salesmanship is an acquired skill and making Master Closers boils down to the information you teach and how you teach it.

Let’s take the information first.  There is an endless amount of sales tips, tricks and tools out there, however, there is also a common core of knowledge and tools that are fundamental, classic and practical.  While learning every workable tool and piece of knowledge is a lofty goal, truly understanding the material of the core alone can greately increase one’s sales.

Regarding teaching it, the first major barrier to understanding occurs in the transfer of the knowledge, whether by reading or listening.  This barrier is a combination of a) misunderstood words and concepts that are left unclarified, b) too steep of a learning curve and c) a theoretical approach without sufficient examples of exactly how it applies to the products or services being sold. 

The second major barrier to understanding is the lack of drilling exercises that allow the employee to learn through repitition not only the tools and techniques, but the data of senior importance.

I began my sales career 50 years ago, in 1958, at age 8, in the projects of Lexington, KY, selling GRIT newspapers and TV Guides door to door.

I have received extensive sales training from many fine organizations, including Morgan Stanley, who invested $50,000 in my training to become a licensed stockbroker for them. That training included 3 straight weeks on the 63rd floor of the World Trade Center, learning and cold calling. I ended up their #1 salesman in mutual funds in America for my class of 1999-2000.
